new year's dress dreaming

(This post was originally posted earlier this week on our brand new lifestyle blog, Bubby and Bean.  If you haven't checked it out yet, it's highly recommended.  Be sure to follow/subscribe; we have a big giveaway coming up later this week!).

Is it too early to be thinking about New Year's Eve?  This little snapshot is of the boyfriend and I side stage at his band's NYE show, right after the big countdown.  The dress I'm wearing was a birthday gift (I'm a good old fashioned New Year's baby!) from a friend who decided it was just the right blend of flapper and 1960s mod to be the perfect Melissa dress, and she was right!  It was tiers of  pale, pale pink pleated chiffon, and I adored it.  I'm try to decide if I'll have time to make something this year (and leaning toward the realistic decision of "highly doubtful") or going for a vintage piece.  I'm imagining a 1950s shift or something a little more 20s that's short, simple and swing-y.  If you have any ideas, please post!

And the "What Inspires You" Winner Is...

Big thanks to all of you who contributed so many incredible quotes, sayings, and song lyrics to our Facebook "What Inspires You?" Contest! All of them (and your explanations as to why they inspire you) were a joy for us to read; so much so that we compiled them into a file to help inspire us everyday here at Mountains of the Moon.  Yep, that good.

It truly wasn't easy to choose a winner because all of the entries were all so thoughtful and moving, but in the end, we could only pick one... And that one is:

"Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn't people feel as free to delight in whatever remains to them?" - Rose Kennedy

We chose this quote because it so simply expresses such a profound statement: As humans, we have a choice in how we view circumstances and whether we focus on the positive or the negative. Each of us will experience suffering in our lives, but how that suffering affects us in the long run depends on how we react. If you make the conscious decision to treat every situation as a blessing in some way, life suddenly feels much more balanced. Just as birds chirp and sing after terrible storms, we can choose to embrace the positive attributes of our lives, and learn to view struggles and pain as lessons that teach us to enjoy life's simple pleasures. And besides, without adversity, how would we appreciate the beauty of life?  If it didn't rain, would we appreciate the sunshine? Without sadness, would we realize the worth of happiness?

As our winner (congrats Alicia Nieto!) said of this quote, "it is a great wayto think of how things happen for a reason, and that you will grow from them."

What's Your Favorite Look for Spring? (Win a $30 Gift Certificate!)

Ahhh, sweet spring fashion. We're pretty excited around here about the fact that the arctic tundra better known as winter in Chicago is finally coming to an end. Daffodils and tulips are peeking through the ground and the recently barren trees are fresh with green leaves. Most importantly, we're eager to put away the winter wardrobe and focus on the (much more fun) flowing fabrics and elegantly free-spirited shapes that only come with spring fashion. With our own spring 2010 collection (designed, as always, using only sustainable fabrics) now available in stores and on our website, the sweet smell of sunshine seems closer than ever. Each of us has a favorite look from the collection, and we want to know yours as well. You can even win a $30 Mountains of the Moon Gift Certificate! Itsuko's comment poetically expressed how Look #1 embodies the essence of spring:

The first look with the blue skirt is my favorite spring look. With the blue of the skirt being akin with the color of the skies, and the faintest hint of floral print in the ruffles on the tank top, this outfit gives off a very airy, fresh kind of feel. The hairband also gives it a native edge, tying it to nature.
